4.5 StarsI cannot get enough of the SSU boys! Having read and loved the other two stories set in this universe, I cannot offer a good reason as to why I waited so long to crack this one open, but I can say that despite its short length, I loved it just as much as the others. This installment revolves around two of SSU's finest football players: Andrew, a newly recruited freshman, and Emilio, a veteran sophomore. This is truly a story of opposites attract: Andrew is the blonde, all-American boy next door in contrast to Emilio's Latino heritage and shady past. Any foray into their relationship is complicated by the overriding homophobic nature inherent in the football atmosphere as well as in the south, even though Andrew dismisses such obstacles with what Emilio characterizes as a naive, innocent, anything-can-happen kind of perspective. Over the short course of these pages, though, Emilio discovers he's not entirely correct on a few things, and he's faced with decisions that will affect his relationship, sexual or otherwise, with Andrew. While some events in this book were what you'd typically expect from an m/m romance, I loved that there were other instances that completely caught you off guard. The ending did seem abrupt, because I forgot about the included preview of Pinned, and felt more like the completion of a part one.
I really hope Emilio and Andrew's relationship is revisited and expanded upon in a future novel, and I feel that with the way Initiation ended that is exactly what Maris has in mind. In all of her books she's created so many unique characters who deserve their own stories, and each book, including this one, seems to contain minor characters who could easily have their own story as well. Initiation is perfect for those who want a sample of what Maris has to offer and is a great addition to your SSU collection. At $0.99 this story really offers a great deal to enjoy a wonderful piece by a fantastic author.

Maris Black is a detailed writer! She holds you and you do not want to put the down, no matter if it is a short read. thought wrestling OMG and now FootballI She has a way with her writing that makes you believe you are part of the story, sitting there watching it unfold. I have read Maris other 2 books Pinned and Owning Corey! These SSU BOYS you will put your butt in a chair and not want to move!!! Matter of fact I am proudly wearing a SSU BOYS shirt, that shows I do support her books. I am fairly new to the MM reading world, but OMG this is a great way to start!! So if I were you start with Pinned and work your way towards Initiation! Those SSU BOYS will make you WANT MORE ;-)
I LOVE anything by Maris Black. I swear, the stories always bring out emotion in me, and I can just connect with them so well. And one other thing... the audible narration for Maris Black books is always AWESOME! I recently tried another author, and it seemed like the narration was being done by a virtually illiterate person who no-shit had just learned to read last week. None of that with a Maris Black book. I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this author!!!
This is a very short story, and so there isn't a lot of time to develop the characters. It also starts out with a football team 'initiation' but then the story didn't go in the direction I thought it would. I don't know, it could have started out almost any way at all, the initiation wasn't really important.
I did like these two characters, even though they can't be very well know to the reader. I like it when MCs TALK to each other, even when they are hurt or frustrated. I would get another one of these SSU books from Maris Black.
This story has it all in it's short amount of pages! Humor, longing, sexual tension, hot sex scenes, hurt, angst, and of course, with hot football boys, domination and ego!
Emilio has wanted Andrew since football camp but it terrified of anyone finding out he's gay. But when the dreaded freshman initiation comes up, he fears Andrew has figured it out by the way he keeps looking at him, and as it turns out, Andrew might want him back. He follows Andrew down a hallway but what he doesn't realize is that he might just be starting the journey of his life.
I really loved this story, a nice little snack to tide us over until the next SSU boys book comes out )
I really enjoyed this short novella set in the author’s SSU Boys series. In this installment we are introduced to Emilio, the narrator of the story. Emilio is a sophomore at SSU and is a linebacker on the school’s football team.
The story starts at the initiation of the freshmen football players. Initiation being a nice name for hazing. While the hazing is occurring, Emilio make eye contact with a freshman who isn’t getting hazed. That freshman, Andrew is checking out Emilio’s crotch! One thing leads to another, we have a quick interrupted attempt at sex, then Andrew takes Emilio home to meet his mother, who it seems already knows all about him.
The rest of the story is set the next day when the team goes off to another town for their first overnight football away game. For such a short story, I felt I really got to know the characters and I really want to know what happens to them down the road after this story ends!
I recommend this novella. I’ve gotten it on good authority that this teaser will be expanded in the near future and we will hear more from Emilio and Andrew! This novella is a standalone and can be read on it’s own, but I highly recommend you read all the books in the series!
