As soon as I read Light of the Moon I knew I was hooked. This series is one of my favorites. David James writes in a way that elicits so much emotion you can't help but be pulled into the world he's created. Since this anthology combines all three of his novellas together I'm going to review each individually.
The Witch's Curse
While I was reading Light of the Moon I really didn't understand Magda nor her blood lust. I felt truly sorry for her but to be honest, I didn't feel any real connection to her. After reading The Witch's Curse I can't even imagine the pain she felt throughout her life. The shame, the guilt, nor the incessant feeling of knowing you're cursed. Magda's story truly broke my heart and I cannot wait to reread Light of the Moon and undoubtedly see her in a different light. Magda and Samuel's story is beautiful and painful, much like Romeo and Juliet's.
The Warrior's Code
In Light of the Moon we briefly meet Zack but I had a feeling he might perhaps play a bigger role in the sequel. I was absolutely entranced by snippets of Zack's back-story, as well as Zack and Kate's journey through the three challenges lying between them and becoming Warriors of the Order. It was dark, powerful, and terrifying. I admire how much strength Zack possesses. His strength transcends the challenge of becoming a Warrior but also encompasses his journey into self-discovery.
This leads me to speak of another thing I love about David James' writing. He's not afraid to speak to people of all different walks of life. He doesn't shy away from diversity but rather embraces it. I think this is very important and rather valiant. I find that many authors either shy away or fail to even attempt to write about people of different backgrounds; whether it is race, gender, sexual identity, etc. David not only embraces but exceeds in his writing about diversity. For that, I applaud him.
The Enchanter's Fire
This might have been my favorite of three novellas. It spoke to a very special part of me, the small part in all of us dying to be accepted. Many of us have been Lily. We've felt unaccepted, uncontrollable, unloved.
This story wasn't just about finding love and acceptance from others but learning to love and accept every part of oneself, including the dark and wild. The writing was so beautiful and I could literally imagine myself standing there, seeing the flames licking off her skin, consuming her hair. That's my favorite thing about David James' writing, the poetic and lyrical quality consumes you and makes even the most dark stories feel beautiful.
Much like my feelings about The Warrior's Code, in The Enchanter's Fire James tackles tough issues that are often glossed over in young adult fiction. He writes about feelings that we are often afraid to face or acknowledge.
Special Features
Beyond the novellas, I loved the author interview and essays that accompanied them. It was interesting to see specific details about The Legend of the Dreamer Series' world and all of the author's thoughts and feelings about his specific writing process, characters, and the series.
This book was full of so many emotions, hope, fear, love, guilt, torment, pain...These emotions were brought to life through David James' melodic and flawless way of writing. It's a wonderful companion anthology to Light of the Moon and begins to fill in some of the unanswered questions surrounding Light of the Moon's secondary characters. I highly recommend grabbing this anthology and Light of the Moon in preparation for Shadow of the Sun.

David is a very descriptive writer who I thoroughly enjoy reading. I hope he continues his powerful writing and brings his readers more.
David James never fails to produce beautiful writing. Having read Light of the Moon, The Witch's Curse, and The Warrior's Code, prior to reading Shades of the Stars, I was yet again blown away by James' poetic writing and beautiful story-telling. I loved reading his essays/playlists and general insights into the world he created for the Legend of the Dreamer series. I found myself wanting to re-read the other three stories, just to experience the stories again. I immensely enjoyed The Enchanter's Fire, Lily's character is incredibly easy to relate to, and her love story is one I believe many people will identify with. It was exciting to get to see a piece of Light of the Moon told from a different perspective. James has truly created another world with this series, and every detail is immaculate, poetic and beautiful.
I have never met anyone who writes quite the way that David does. I could call his writing beautiful, visceral, and emotionally-stirring, but those words simply do not do his words justice. What David does with his writing is to transport you right inside his characters' skins and make you feel what they feel. His stories are fantasy, which is what initially drew me to his debut novel LIGHT OF THE MOON, but as I dove into both that novel and each of these companion stories, I found very REAL and important themes about sacrifice, courage, and embracing one's identity.
The Witch's Curse. I remembered Magda as the dark and downright creepy witch in LIGHT OF THE MOON. When I first met her in the novel, I was intrigued but not enamored -- The Witch's Curse however, changed that. We read about Magda as a girl with strange eyes that mark her as being fated with a terrible curse, and the story of her romance with Samuel is utterly heartbreaking and tragic. Out of the three stories, this one is probably my favorite because of the raw emotions that it evoked in me.
The Warrior's Code. This is Zack and Kate's story, and I thought this one stood out from the others because of the strong message about courage -- and not just courage to physically fight as they do in the story but the courage to do what is necessary to stand tall and embrace who we are as individuals. David tells the story of Zack, Kate, and other teenagers who are thrust into trials necessary to prove themselves as "Warriors." What I enjoyed most about this story was seeing Zack as almost an underdog and overcoming his own personal fears to rise above the others. I also loved how David was courageous enough as a writer to portray such diversity in his characters' backgrounds. Proving oneself was something achievable by all, regardless of race, gender, sexual orientation -- as long as they had the courage to stand tall and fight.
The Enchanter's Fire Lily became another one of David's characters who I felt for so strongly and rooted for. Feeling like she didn't belong because of who she was, feeling unloved and outcast, Lily was the perfect representation to me of true inner strength and courage, and her character spoke to me in a similar way that Magda's did. She was literally fiery, in a way that was visceral and real to my mind as I read about her. And her story is the perfect note on which to end my review, because that's what I mean about David's stories and his writing style -- he has the capacity to make you FEEL.
